Dance of Candles is the result of Maimouna Touré’s artistic residency at Bamako Art Gallery. Developed over several weeks of research, observation, and creation, this exhibition reflects an intimate contemplation of light, absence, and the human capacity to persevere through the challenges of everyday life.
Through a series of works created during her residency, the artist explores those moments when the light goes out, yet life continues. In the dimness of homes, courtyards, and streets, fragile flames still endure: a candle on a table, a lamp held at arm’s length, a half-lit face, a family gathered in the darkness. These familiar scenes become the starting point for a reflection on resilience, solidarity, and the strength of human connections.
For Maimouna Touré, lack is not merely an absence. It is a space of revelation where gestures, silences, and gazes take on new meaning. When everything grows dark, what remains visible is not only physical light, but also the people around us, the habits that comfort us, and the quiet strengths that enable us to move forward.
Nourished by her residency experience at Bamako Art Gallery, Dance of Candles invites visitors to look anew at these often ordinary yet deeply human moments. The exhibition celebrates our ability to find light in darkness, beauty in simplicity, and hope in the most fragile of circumstances.
More than an exhibition, Dance of Candles is a sensitive meditation on the persistence of humanity when everything seems uncertain, and on those small lights that continue, despite everything, to illuminate our lives.
